For Shame!

Costumes and Masks for sale at the market

Halloween story continued...

Tonight more trick-or-treaters came to our door until we ran out of candy.  The last group was particularly creepy-looking in their costumes.  My kids recognized their voices as young people that live down the road a ways.  These masked ghouls told me a wild tale about having killed a snake on our property, and gullible me went outside to see it.  Then they made scary noises and acted like they were coming at me.  I screamed, which they loved, and then they laughed and ran away.  The story will be repeated, I'm sure.

After that we had no more candy except some peppermint candy canes I had bought for Christmas, and I really didn't want to have to give those away to more scary people in gruesome masks.  So... we turned off all the lights in the front part of the house, and hid in the family room to watch a movie with the volume turned way down.  Soon we heard knocking at the door, and we stayed quiet and tried to ignore it. My heart was racing.  With guilt, not fear.

Finally I couldn't stand the thought of turning someone away.  So seldom do our neighbors have any reason to come to our door.  I reached up to get the precious Christmas candy, and opened the door to find....

A neighbor woman delivering a bucket full of "barbacoa," sharing her bounty of goat or chicken (we couldn't decide which it was) from their Day of the Dead celebration.  Some people aren't too crazy about Mexican barbacoa, but my kids love it.  Since Jim is out of town and I am on a very strict doctor-ordered diet, I had actually suggested a bowl of cereal for a light supper.  After the neighbor left, they each enjoyed a big bowl of goat-or-chicken in the most fabulous spicy barbecue-type sauce.  Yum.

I am so ashamed.  I'm sure there is some spiritual application for this if only I could think of it.  Hiding away in the dark to avoid "evil" sometimes we risk missing huge blessings?  Something like that.

Meanwhile, here are some photos from my trip to the city today;
