On health and wellness

My graduate school roommates were shocked when I first met Jim's mom because I didn't even attempt to impress her, at least not with my culinary skills. Instead I merely served her what I would normally be eating for a light supper: veggie tacos (whole wheat tortillas with alfalfa sprouts, shredded carrots, a bit of cheese, and salsa). Back in those days I was quite the health nut. The truth is I haven't been as healthy since.

After fifteen plus years of eating too much Mexican food (and seven years of yummy Guatemalan food before that), complaining of weight gain, headaches and a myriad of other seemingly unrelated symptoms, I am finally returning to my quest for optimal health. This is day four of a 21 day doctor-supervised de-tox. Which means I am eating only fruits and vegetables and a small amount of brown rice or lentils, drinking enormous amounts of water, taking a handful of prescribed supplements three times a day, and attempting to walk a lot.

This would have been so much easier in Mexico where I can walk without having to drive to a Metro-Park to do so, and where fruits and vegetables are affordable (with negotiable prices), but the good doctor is here in Akron, so I am stuck beginning this right here in the land of plenty, where food is the focus of every good fellowship. But you know? I am not having trouble turning down all this fabulous food that I might not see again for two years because I am finally beginning to feel better! It will be so worth it.

One interesting observation is how many like-minded folks are out there. Once I mentioned de-tox in my prayer letter, I got a number of emails and phone calls from people encouraging me that I'm on the right path. Apparently there are a number of believers who have reached the same conclusion that standard medicine and drugs cannot undo all the harm inflicted on our bodies through modern living. If this works for me, maybe we'll make some more converts.

Actually I am amazed at how silent these folks generally are regarding their special diets. I suppose it is one of those topics like music in the church, that would cause division if people became vocal about their beliefs on health and wellness. To me (who can't read a good book without sharing it!) it will be difficult, but I vow to not cram this down anyone's throat once I am healthy. Instead I will give glory to God for helping me find my way back to wellness after so many wasted years of feeling so-so or downright miserable.

"My soul will boast in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice." Psalm 34:2

That's great that you are going back to healthy eating and exercise. I'm trying (and often failing) to do the same. Love to hear more about it.

Years ago there was a considerable movement within a church we fellowshiped at by several people dedicated to healthy eating. Problem was they mixed their handouts and philosophy with "out there" condemnations like "never have cow's milk ... it is for baby cows, not people" and "never ever ever eat sugar" ... kinda weirded out others who might've otherwise been willing to give it a go! Go for it Jamie and keep up the good work.
