My "Happy Tea"

It occurred to me that in all my blogging, I have yet to own up to one of my more notable oddities, and that is my addiction to Kombucha.  I know, it sounds really bad.  My kids think it tastes really bad.  But it isn't, and the kids are wrong.  It's wonderful stuff!

For the uninformed, Kombucha is a health tonic I brew at home.  If you do a google search you can find a long list of supposed benefits.  Supposedly it will cure just about anything that ails you.  I started making and drinking it mostly because it is high in natural enzymes, probiotics, antioxidants, and vitamin B.  It's a pick-me-up in the afternoon, and I drink it in the morning flavored with pomegranate juice instead of coffee.

The part that grosses the kids out is the actual brewing process.  Basically I make a gallon of sweet green tea, and then add the "mushroom" and a bit of the Kombucha from an earlier batch.  The very word mushroom conjures all sorts of inaccurate images.  It's not really a mushroom at all, but a S.C.O.B.Y. which stands for a Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast.  Again, to quote the kids, it looks a bit like a human liver or some other organ.  Again, I disagree.

Anyway, the result is a bubbly, very mildly alcoholic drink something like ginger beer which I drank in England back when I was in college.

You can debate whether it has any real health benefits or not, but all I know is that I really, really, really missed it when I was in the states for Mike and Amy's wedding earlier this month.  I personally think it helps fight fatigue, and with Dengue, I was already very tired all the time.  I also think it helps calm my nerves.  Though I didn't snap at anyone (that I know of), I do think I felt more edgy than I normally do.

One news article said "Kombucha:  Wonder Tonic or Slimy Sludge?"

Anything that starts with green tea can't be all bad! I didn't realize that Kombucha tea was a sort of "brew"--that's the wrong word isn't it? I guess I mean a culture. Interesting! I though it was another type of tea.

I hate the stuff. I have a friend that makes it and has tried and tried to convince me to drink it, but after one sip I was NOT interested.

I'm weak. More power to you! Lisa~

Heidi, try it! You might like it.

Okay, Lisa. You just need to taste a GOOD batch. Sometime it's better than others, it's true. I bet you never tried it with pomegranate juice, did you? Haha. No worries.

Maybe I should run a poll. (I think your vote would be the majority.)
