Jim needed to fly up to the states to bring down some new recording equipment. The cheapest flight was the direct Continental flight from Oaxaca to Houston, but it was cheaper if he stayed two nights before returning. Since I'd been hankering to visit some friends in Houston for many years, Jim let me make the trip in his place. Maybe some of you read part of that story on the IRL blog: Mission Impossible.
What I only mentioned in passing was how I spent the two days catching up with old friends from my teen years. Mark was in my sixth grade class, and Suzie was in a summer discipleship class with me (led by a high school girl next door) a year later. In high school they were among my very closest friends, a gang of six or more of the greatest people I've ever known.
Eventually the group broke up as we scattered to different parts of the world, but each one holds a very dear place in my heart. Even though I have read statistics about how few of the people who claim to be Christians in high school will still be followers of Christ by the age of forty, my high school friends beat all the odds. 100% of the original gang are still actively involved in church and leading lives worthy of the calling of Christ. That's really amazing!
Mark and Suzie are the only ones who paired up and got married, but since their early roots as a couple date back to high school, their memories are a bit sharper than the rest of ours. It was fun looking at the old Lake Highlands Year Books and also catching up on way too many years since then.

I've never attended any of my high school reunions, but I really would love to get together with the old gang someday. When Suzie and Lee graduated a year ahead of the rest of us, we had a special dinner together, which we referred to as our "First Annual Dinner." Within two more years the tradition was already beginning to slide. I'm getting sentimental in my old age.
Last summer in California, I met up with Peggy, who was another member of the infamous dinner party. It had been over ten years since we had been together.

Eric is another one of the group, the one I have kept in touch with the most, only because his wife, Mary, has become one of my dearest friends. It helps that they live in a convenient place for a visit every time we drove up through Texas from Guatemala or Mexico.
Okay, since starting this post I've decided it is definitely time for a big time reunion. I'm off to find Lee. Everyone else I know how to reach.
