Quotable quotes, part 2

Amazing how much younger we were twenty years ago! Yes, I know, kids, those were absolutely the dorkiest glasses ever. That's why I had the RK surgery a few years later. No more glasses until recently, but now I have cute little reading glasses. Just look at these innocent-looking faces. Can you picture these guys ever saying an unkind word?

This morning at breakfast, we started memorizing Philippians 2:2-3 which says:
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves."

Our family has a long history of trying (and often failing) to put this into practice. An early journal entry, later quoted in my book of Loker quotes, mentions a dispute between Christopher and Timmy. Chris, who was three at the time, instructed Timmy: "The Bible says be kind and think others are more important, so you let ME go first!"

Timmy, who must have been barely two, still missing the /s/ sound, told his Bubba, "The Bible tay be wheat!" (The Bible says be sweet!) Later Timmy threatened Chris with the "pankin' poon" (spanking spoon) if he didn't give in to what Timmy wanted.

Both were trying to use the Word to their own advantage from a very young age. Isn't that just like grown-ups, though? We hear a good word or sermon or quote, and immediately think, "So-and-so needs to hear this!" At the same time, God must just shake his head in frustration when we read a word that is very clearly for us personally, like the verse in Philippians, and still somehow manage to botch up the application of it. He probably wishes He could take a pankin poon to us sometimes and just force us to be wheat!
