From baths to showers

Continuing on the themes of relaxing, being pampered, and suffering reverse culture shock, I remember another incident in which ladies wanted to bless me with a day of luxury. This time I had spoken at a ladies' Bible study, and they surprised me with a certificate for a day at the Spa. Let me tell you, I'll never forget that one!

Sparing the gory details, suffice it to say women apparently love to lie on a cushioned bed completely exposed save for two tiny towels, and have horizontal jet streams massaging their entire body with shooting water. For me it was simply funny. Hysterically funny. I could not relax and enjoy the experience because it tickled, hurt, and made me laugh all at the same time. It was one of the most un-missionary hours of my life.

The massage afterward was quite relaxing, but it still bothered me to spend others' money on something I would never pay for out of my own pocket. It's interesting to note how ladies want to bless missionaries in a tangible way, rather than just praying for God to "bless the missionaries." This July, I am privileged to attend a special non-silent retreat for women just like me. It's hosted by a group called "Women of the Harvest" who desire to pamper and minister to ladies on furlough from the mission field.

After hearing an inspiring sermon on suffering a few weeks ago, it's almost ironic that my mind goes to so many "pampering" stories. Maybe these restful times are what revive missionaries for the more stressful times of serving in foreign lands. I honestly feel prepared to share in the fellowship of suffering with Christ, but I gladly accept these gifts of pleasure when they come from Him.

"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want."
