Injun Turtles and Peer Pressure

1990, Bethel Temple, Parma, Ohio. It was our first official furlough from Guatemala. Coming home from church one Sunday morning, Christopher (in the blue slacks in front of Sylvia J, his teacher) declared that he had to have an "Injun Turtle." When asked why he needed one, he simply reported that "ALL" the kids had injun turtles. Later we figured out what he was talking about as the "Ninja Turtle" rage became more prominent.

Every time we have taken children to the states, we've had to face certain trends, wondering if it's worth resisting the temptation to follow the crowd in a fad that would pass before we ever return to the US again. This coming year, I'm afraid we may be faced with a more expensive craze. Since we were there in 2006, a new gismo called a wii has appeared on the scene. Too bad it's not just a cheap little plastic green turtle man.
