The Eyes Have It
"I just love your eyes." These words are the very first compliment a cute boy ever paid me. I was in Spanish class in junior high, when John Butters gazed intently into my eyes and made this heart-felt proclamation.
Before I could become too flattered or flustered, though, he unexpectedly added, "They are the exact color as my dead cat's."
Cue soundtrack of a needle scraping across an otherwise romantic music album....
John disappeared sometime before high school, and I always wondered what became of him. In my mind I imagine him looking like Johnny Depp in Benny and Joon.
My friend, Peggy, was always "the pretty one." She had blonde Farah Fawcett hair with those bangs-like-wings that were so popular back in the '70s. In contrast I always felt like Peggy Flemming, (Joan Cusack in real life), the quirky character who played Julia Roberts' sister in Runaway Bride. She was actually attractive in her own way, but next to Julia Roberts' character, she looked goofy. That was me in junior high.
It's been exactly 40 years this month since I graduated from high school. Funny how memories like this pop up all of a sudden.
