"Meh" Prevention

99 Rainy Day/ Boredom Busters

Last summer we stayed in Mexico until we flew up for Mike and Amy's wedding.  To alleviate any possibility of boredom, I filled a big jar with 99 slips of paper with the following ideas.  If a child complained of being bored, they had to pick one of these and do whatever it said.

Sadly the summer went too quickly and they never got bored enough to choose even a fraction of these.  Debbie sometimes picks them now, just for fun, but washing windows and the other chores generally get rejected in favor of the online games.

Some of the ideas I gathered from different online sources, but I've lost track of where I got them.  Many were my original ideas.  Looking over the list now, it's obvious I'm not a very artsy kind of mom, or I would have included more art projects.

Feel free to borrow any of these that might appeal to you. (Some can only be done in our little corner of Oaxaca.)  Better yet, make your own!  It's like insurance or carrying an umbrella.  You'll never need it when you have it.

Consider it "Meh" prevention.

  • Clean all the ceiling fans thoroughly
  • Take everything out of upper closet in big bathroom, dust shelf and everything before putting it all back.

  • Do three random acts of kindness today
  •  Make limonada or naranjada all by yourself
  •  Set up the hammock under the carport with Dad’s or Filiberto’s help.
  •  Get your friends to help you pick up trash along our road or the airstrip
  •  Plan a drive-in movie night on the side of our house.  Invite the neighbors, pick a movie in Spanish, pop popcorn and make Kool-Aid, and show it with the video projector
  •  Watch a movie of your choice – in Spanish!
  •  Make a list of things to do when you are bored.  Add them to the Boredom Blaster Jar.
  •  Clean out your closet
  •  Make up a fresh batch of play-doh and invite friends (young and old) over to play.  Or just invite little kids to come for a couple of hours.  You can play marble works, train set, or anything you might otherwise feel too old to play.
