Nit-picking, broken ribs, dental fiascos, etc.

It's now September, and we are three weeks into our new school year. I'm not sure where the summer went, but August is fresh on my mind with all its minor crises, so I'll talk about that.

First of all, Jim managed to break three ribs, leaving him pretty much lazy-boy-chair-ridden for the first couple of weeks of recovery. How did he do such a thing? Oh, what I'd give for a more exciting yarn to spin. The truth is almost boring. He had taken an afternoon off with our coworkers, Ellie and Julio, who were both taking their children (and Julio his visiting grandchildren) to go paintballing. With his face mask obstructing the view, Jim simply slipped on the rugged terrain and went straight down. It seems his elbow dug into his rib as he hit the ground, and thus the fractures. Now he has been home-bound for a few weeks, trying not to moan and groan too much when he tosses and turns in the night.

So that was pretty memorable. Secondly we all contracted head lice (again!). This is the third round for the summer. It started with our bus trip down from Mexico City after the wedding. Really there is nothing I can say to even lighten the topic or make it remotely funny. It was just exasperating. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get rid of this pesky problem, please leave your comments. I think the upholstered furniture must be harboring nits.

Lastly I'll remember August for poor Hannah's dental woes. After several years of dental work and root canals starting with one simple cavity (repaired badly by a local dentist of questionable credentials), Hannah's molar finally just broke. Two weeks ago, she went back into the city yet again, this time for oral surgery to repair it. Bless her heart. In all she has spent literally weeks of her life in a dentist's chair. In hindsight, it would have been cheaper to have flown her to the U.S. with her initial cavity rather than send her for that first fateful appointment down here. One more visit to the dentist next week, and she should be finished!

Overall, August wasn't a terribly horrible month, but these are the events that stick out in my mind. You can see why.

head lice yuk!!!!

The best treatment I've found is using cator oil and mineral oil rub it on hair thickly cover with a shower cap leave on overnight then comb hair before you wash it. This helps the eggs slide off the hair follicles easier. Furniture can be treated with flea and tick powder (the kind you treat carpets with) sprinkle on then let it sit overnight in the morning vacum it off. I'm glad I click over from the sunlight forum If this can help you. Make sure you retreat heads 7days after treatment to prevent new hatchings Just in case you miss some eggs.

Glad to meet you. I have a heart for missionaries. I may let my daughter 11 ask you some questions about your life as a missionary. She is in the stars program of missionettes at our church. We are going to be doing an intro to missions unit soon.

I am *so* glad that I found your blog! I've been reading your SL posts for a while with great interest, as dh and I run a missions organization and have worked in Tapalpa. Who knows, maybe we'll be moving down before too long. :-)

We did a little mission to the city of Wimauma and came home with lice. The best advice I got was put mayo in our hair and then a plastic bag over it for at least 3 hours. It suffocates the lice and the eggs. Sorry you have to go through this again... I think the housework (sheets, stuffed animals, etc) is the hardest.

Jamie,
You have such a way with words. I love to read what you have to say, but much more I love to hear you tell a story in person!!!!
